Chill, BRAIDS are not that big a deal sis... WTF!!! Here's why Black Women get upset

Its hard to explain what "braids" mean to a black woman. As a young girl braids are a dreaded Sunday afternoon of sitting still for over an hour while mommy tells you "turn your head, sit up, bend your head down". As a pre-teen, braids are a necessity to keep your hair neat while you embark upon sports or other activities, for me it was track and field, swim team practices and dance rehearsals. Then growing into young adulthood braids become almost a seasonal style, senegalese twists or goddess cornrows in the summer, crochets and protective styles in the winter months. And now, for me as a mother and "grown woman" (in my Beyonce voice lol) Braids have come full circle. I'm telling Genevieve to sit still while I work on her style, only to sit and braid my own hair just an hour later. To explain what BRAIDS mean to me, they are not just a hairstyle, they are a representation of a Black Woman’s life cycle, they are Our pride, our history, our creativity, our connection to our mothers and aunts and cousins that have toiled to ensure our beauty was seen inside and out. In short, Braids to a Black Woman are an expression of LOVE.
